Great Things Going On
Though our K-8 summer school program just ended during the last week of June, our Academic Resource Center summer credit recovery and acceleration program is now up and running. ARC director Joy Werner, and summer school instructors Joe Martinez, Carla Smith, and Vincent Ortega are currently working with high school students from Center and throughout the region on Monday through Friday to get caught up on credits for graduation. Some students even come to this program to accelerate their learning so they can secure more flexible schedule time to pursue course options in their fields of interest during the regular school year. ARC summer school will continue through the end of the month of August.
It was also exciting to see the effort the Saguache Board of County Commissioners made to meet in Center last week for a work session. Doing so offered many locals the opportunity to stop in and share their concerns or simply stories of the many things that are happening in the Center area. I am quite encouraged to hear our commissioners plan to do this again in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank the community members and Americorps Vista and Americorps NCCC members who were responsible for putting on the wonderful Chili Fest and Car Show that took place on school grounds here in Center last weekend. Everyone I spoke to said the event, though not extremely large, was well run and worth attending. We hope these become annual events that draw people to the Center community well into the future.
Big Things We Are Working On
We are currently hard at work preparing buildings, our school grounds, and athletic fields for the upcoming school year and athletic seasons. With the preliminary release of CSAP we are also beginning the work require tot send out Jump Start notification letters to students entering grades 6-12. Though it is mid-summer the Fyock Community Library Staff is also hard at work training for and putting in a new library materials circulation system. Unfortunately we had to close down the library on Monday July 14th to install the system, but our hard working custodial staff also took advantage of that time by steam cleaning the library carpets at that time as well.
The Past Week
This past week I worked on issues related to securing alternative education institution status related to school performance frameworks ratings for the Academic Resource Center and the Center Virtual Academy. I also worked on some historical items related to the school district and reviewed board and administrative policies related to curriculum and calendar. I attended our regular July board of education meeting on Tuesday evening and sat in on a Center Recreation Advisory Board meeting on Wednesday evening. On Thursday I finalized teacher and administrator evaluation reports for CDE related to our being an SB-191 pilot district. On Friday I did Race to the top of the Valley work related to the SLV Evaluation Calculator that we have created locally.
The Week Ahead
On Monday I am meeting with Katrina Ruggles about the future of our use of Americorps NCCC and Americorps-Vista workers in our community. On Tuesday I have a Early Steps to School Success site liaison meeting. On Thursday I will be meeting about this year’s all Valley PLC session work with other Race to the top of the Valley leaders. In the afternoon on Thursday we will have an Americorps site visit by state directors.
Thanks for listening once again and have a great week!
