Great Things Going On
As we roll on into summer I want to thank the Center Schools custodial staff for the great work they have been doing taking on many big summer projects, conducting routine seasonal cleaning and repair work, and keeping our school grounds looking great. Big facilities projects taking place this summer include converting the old Masonic building into a boys and girls club. In doing so we are replacing the roof and windows and upgrading flooring in this building. With the roof now in place, the windows removed, and old flooring torn up, this project is well under way. on schedule, and under budget. Another large summer project we are doing is converting the remainder of the old alternative school building into preschool-daycare instructional space. Rooms have already been cleared for this project to begin, including an addition of upgraded flooring and age appropriate bathroom space.
Though the beautiful summer weather has arrived many of our children are still fully engaged in learning activities. Our annual Lindamood-Bell elementary summer reading academy has already been going for a week, and many Skoglund Middle School students are currently engaged in reading, math, and science summer school coursework. These summer instructional sessions for Center Schools students in grades K-6 will be taking place through the end of June.

Meanwhile, many Center children are getting the opportunity to participate in a multitude of summer activities being offered through our Americorps program and by our school sports programs. Americorps team members are allowing our students opportunities to go swimming, take art classes, participate in a gardening club, lift weights, go skateboarding, attend cooking club, go rock climbing, participate in a reading club, explore robotics, and attend open gym. During the month of June Center High School coaches also have our athletes engaged in basketball, football, and baseball leagues and camps. Last but not least, the Fyock community Library is also conducting its annual summer reading enrichment program for area children, and the Center Schools cafeteria staff is providing free breakfast and lunch to all children who walk through our doors.
Big Things We Are Working On
I am in the midst of gathering information needed to complete all classified department head evaluations. I have also begun spending time taking wall items down in my office so our facilities staff can clean and improve it before Mr. Vance moves in on July 1st. Our PK-12 administrative staff has been working to fill all open positions and we also hope to fill several more open positions during our upcoming board of education meeting this coming Tuesday. A major focus of that meeting will also be to review the entire B section of our policy manual, including all of those that pertain to the conduct and work of our board of education.
The Past Week and the Week Ahead
On Monday I met with key leaders about the future of the Boys and Girls Club of Center. I also arranged for new office space for our Early Steps to School Success program that has to move out of the old alternative school facility to make room for more preschoolers. I met with school board vice president Yuri Cendejas on Tuesday to discuss general school district governance issues. On Tuesday I also spent significant time meeting with researchers participating in the Colorado Immersion Training on Community Engagement. On Wednesday and Thursday I worked in my office on my end of June to do list projects.
I am taking a personal day this Monday to tile the floor of the newly expanded kitchen in mine and Becky's new place of residence in Cañon City. On Tuesday I will attend my last San Luis Valley Superintendent’s Advisory Council, Center School District Accountability Committee, and regular Center Schools Board of Education meetings. I will meet about our RTI and homeless student programs on Wednesday, and then make my way to Vail to present at the healthy schools leadership retreat being held there on Thursday and Friday.
Thanks for listening once again. Have a great week!
