Great Things Going On
This week we learned that Center High School graduate Taylor Lobato will be presented the Colorado Association of School Executives CASEY award at the end of July. Each year the CASEY award goes to a non-CASE member who has had the greatest impact on education or education policy in the state of Colorado during past year. Recent recipients of the CASEY include former Colorado Speaker of the House of Representatives Andrew Romanof, Lobato v Colorado lead attorney Kathy Gebhardt, Colorado School Finance Project executive director Tracie Rainey, and Governor John Hickenlooper. Taylor is being given this honor because of the inspirational job she did representing all of Colorado’s students as the face of the Lobato v Colorado lawsuit during the past several years.
I want to thank Scott Poole, Mark Jones and all of their assistant coaches for giving up some of their precious summer by putting on a great girl’s basketball tournament last week. They had a wonderful turn out of teams from around the Valley and Center’s hoopsters got plenty of chances to play against strong competition.

Becky and I spent the better part of last week getting to know Idalia Escobedo who is a bi-national exchange teacher from Mexico. Idalia will be spending June and part of July with our family in Center as she supports the work of our Summer Reading Academy. She recently received training in Lindamood-Bell reading intervention strategies and will soon be applying these skills in working with our Haskin Elementary School students.
The Past Week
I spent time early in the week catching up on administrative paperwork. On Wednesday and Thursday I was in Durango for the Colorado Legacy Foundation Growing Together convening. While there I had the pleasure of celebrating Case Zimmerman’s birthday, and also presentation information about our Center Schools Jump Start program with Case’s mom Carrie, and with Kevin Jones. On Thursday I traveled from Durango to Denver to attend a CASE Executive Committee meeting. I stayed over in Denver until Friday to attend the quarterly CASE Coordinating Council meeting.
Big Things We Are Working On
Summer school for middle and high school students will begin on Monday June 10th. We also continue to work on building a complete teaching staff for the 2013-14 school year and finalizing our budget. Additionally, I am focusing on department head evaluations, preparing for Race to the top of the Valley PLC work, and work on implementing a Valley wide Extended Learning Opportunities grant.
The Coming Week
I have to go back to Denver on Monday to attend and present at a statewide Turnaround Improvement Grant Professional Learning Community session. On Tuesday I’ll attend our monthly San Luis Valley Superintendent Advisory Council meeting as well as the regular June board of education and district accountability committee meetings. On Wednesday I will participate in interviews designed to hire a new BOCES Migrant Education Director. I hope to take some personal vacation time late in the week.
Thanks so much for listening again and have a great week!
