Great Things Going On
I want to offer a gigantic thank you to Center High School principal and athletic director Kevin Jones, Center High School track coach Dennis Schoenfelder, and all of the Center Schools staff members and parents who coordinated our annual Center High School Track Invitational on Friday March 22nd. I know it can be a ton of work to put on such events. Each year we hold our meet we are able to show off the fine park facilities we have in Center, and we are able to save a lot of travel time for many San Luis Valley track teams.
On Monday March 25th just as we were preparing to finalize our monthly payroll process we discovered our district financial management software system had crashed. However, thanks to great work by director of technology Julio Paez and director of finance Betty Casanova, a proper backup file was accessed and, though processed a little later than planned, our payroll direct deposit and checks were able to be prepared in time for staff members. Thank you Julio and Betty for quickly attending to this potential catastrophe and getting us back up and running!

During the week of March 18th the statewide TCAP assessment process was completed in the Center School District. In relation to this effort many administrators and staff members worked hard to ensure our students were properly prepared and motivated to try and do their best. Testing went off smoothly and we look forward to receiving the results so we can pour into the data to learn more about how we are teaching and what our student individual needs are.
On Friday March 22nd we held a going away party for our most recent Americorps crew. I would like to once again thank Katrina Ruggles for all the work she does to make it possible to secure Americorps support for student learning and to offer much needed human resources to the Center community.

The Past Two Weeks
On Monday March 18th board director James Sanchez and I made the trek to Grand Junction to attend a follow-up TBD meeting of Governor Hickenlooper’s. At this meeting we were asked to share our opinions about how to improve upon Colorado’s school finance and transportation funding issues.
On Wednesday March 20th board members Michael Lobato, Yuridia Cendejas, James Sanchez and I were in Denver to attend the CASB San Luis Valley regional day at the Capitol. While there we had the opportunity to witness work being done in the senate education committee to amend the new school finance act to a point where it is more acceptable to more Colorado communities. We also had face-to-face meetings with Kathy Gebhardt, the lead attorney in the Lobato v Colorado lawsuit, and some of Senator Michael Johnston’s staff members who have been authoring the new finance act.
On Thursday March 21st I was invited to be a panelist at a Donnell-Kay sponsored blended learning opportunities gathering in Denver. After that event I was then able to run back over to the capitol to watch as the new finance act passed out of the senate education committee.
Center Schools was on spring break from Saturday March 23 through Tuesday April 2nd.

Big Things We Are Working On
The school district continues to engage in the process of offering suggestions to help make the new school finance act better for all children in Colorado. Additionally, we are also beginning to focus our attention on the renewal of the current finance act, as this will likely be the one we will be operating under for the 2013-14 school year.
We are also continuing to build our 2013-14 academic improvement plan, while also preparing for end of year building reviews and final principal and teacher evaluations.

The Coming Week
I will be enjoying Monday with my family, but will chair the Colorado School safety Resource Center advisory board meeting in Denver on Tuesday April 2nd.
On Wednesday evening the board of education will be holding a work session during which they will work on technology resources related to their role as board directors.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will also offer plenty of time to be spent in the school buildings.

Extra Points
The Center Schools Board of Education will be conducting business hours on Wednesday April 10th from 10 AM until 2 PM in the Fyock Community Library. Parents, students, community members, and staff members are welcome to stop in to visit with board members at this time to share their thoughts and to build relationships.
