Great Things Going On
Last Monday Center High School seniors were awarded roughly a quarter of a million dollars in scholarships to attend college or other postsecondary institutions. The bulk of these scholarships were awarded to students from community partners Trinidad State Community College and Adams State University, though students were also awarded dollars from the Colorado School of Mines, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado State University, the Skeff, McCormick, and Entz families, and the Kiwanis Club of Center. Additionally, Center High School senior Nicholas Lobato was awarded the Daniels Foundation Scholarship, which will pay for all of his tuition and fees to the college of his choice.
Speaking of college, in the past few weeks a slew of recent Center High School graduates were awarded college diplomas including Lindsay Garcia, Travis Phillips, Ashley Warsh, Jacqueline Burch, and Brittany Myers. Center Schools would like to congratulate these young men and women on their wonderful accomplishments.
Congratulations are due to Center High School senior Maya Martinez who placed fourth at the Colorado State Track and Field Championships in the discus competition. Maya has been an outstanding competitor for Center High School in volleyball, basketball, and track, and was even named our outstanding female athlete for 2013-14. Maya's field coach this year was Dale Beiriger.

During the past week many rights of passage took place on the Center Schools campus, including a daytime ceremony during which Haskin Elementary 5th graders were promoted to Skoglund Middle School, an evening ceremony during which Skoglund 8th graders were promoted to Center High School, a Tuesday evening ceremony during which the Center High School National Honor Society inducted new members, and wrapping up on Saturday when our Academic Resource Center graduation ceremony took place. We will close out the academic year this Saturday, May 24th, when our Center High School class of 2014 graduation ceremony takes place.
I want to thank Center High School senior seminar instructor Katrina Ruggles for pulling together several recent Center High School graduates, on our last ICAP Wednesday of the year, to counsel the Class of 2014 about what they need to be prepared for as they enter college or the workforce. This was a great idea as our students were able to learn from those who came before them about what to expect as they enter the next phase of their lives.
On Monday of last week Haskin Elementary School honored students who showed outstanding progress through our Lindamood-Bell after school reading academy by honoring them with “shooting stars” awards. Our after school reading academy is a major reason why Haskin Elementary’s reading and math scores have progressed so much in the past several years.
Finally, on Monday the Skoglund Middle School student council held a going away picnic for principal Carrie Zimmerman. At this event students and staff members were treated to a barbeque lunch, a special cake, and were offered a chance to wish Carrie well as she takes on here new duties as the Director of Instruction for the Alamosa School District.

Big Things Going On
This past week the Center Schools board of education gave permission for the district to hire three additional teachers: an elementary ELS instructor, an additional 2nd grade teacher, and an additional secondary math teacher, as part of its 2014-15 district budget commitment. Additionally, the board instructed Director of Finance Betty Casanova to proceed with her plan to enroll all full time employees in a district provided health plan. Finally, the board has asked for more information related to the possible purchase of several transportation fleet vehicles through a lease purchase agreement with the Community Banks of Colorado.
This Thursday at Noon the board will hold a special meeting to approve Center High School graduates, adopt a preliminary budget and to vote on candidates suggested for hire as Carrie Zimmerman’s replacement as Skoglund Middle School principal. We will also be looking to recommend some folks to fill a couple of secondary math and an elementary ESL position.

The Past Week
On Monday middle and high school academic and sports awards were distributed. On Tuesday I attended the May San Luis Valley Superintendents Advisory Council meeting in the morning, our May district accountability meeting in the afternoon, and our regular May board of education meeting in the evening. On Wednesday Skoglund and CHS students had their last ICAP day of the year. On Thursday our 8th graders went to Denver on their annual class trip. On Friday the Haskin 5th grade class and the Skoglund 8th grade classes each progressed to the next level of their schooling. On this day I also attended a CDE study group webinar on competency based education. Saturday was our annual Academic Resource Center-Center Virtual Academy graduation ceremony.
The Week Ahead
I will be spending all morning on Monday interviewing Skoglund Middle School principal candidates with our principal selection committee. On Tuesday, the last day of school, I will be joining Rich Brandt and the district facilities crew in a campus beautification session as we prepare the grounds for Saturday’s CHS graduation ceremony and the summer in general. Staff members are required to report for one more day this Wednesday, as they finalize their grades and prepare their work-spaces for summer. On Thursday we will hold a special board of education meeting at Noon. On Friday there will be lots of preparation taking place for the Center High School graduation ceremony, which takes place on Saturday at 10 AM.
Thanks for listening once again. Have a great week!
